Arts Minister Peter Garrett yesterday launched the Street Warriors’ hip hop debut album, Unstoppable Force, in a media event at the Carriageworks, Eveleigh. The event, hosted by Gadigal’s Brad Cooke, featured an interview and performance by the Street Warriors with special guests Albert David and Shane Howard, and a speech by the Minister.
“Abie and Warwick Wright, who make up Street Warriors, are to be congratulated for their great album Unstoppable Force – the first produced with Breakthrough funding from the first round. It is a great achievement and a testament to their talent,” Mr Garrett said.
Street Warriors were among a number of artists selected in the first round of the program by the assessment panel comprising music industry professionals Christine Anu, Rhoda Roberts and Rob Collins.
Mr Garrett also announced the second round of the contemporary Indigenous music program Breakthrough: Emerging Indigenous contemporary musicians recording initiative which will help three more artists/groups produce a professional CD for commercial release.

“Breakthrough is an initiative of the Cultural Ministers Council and in 2010 is providing funding of up to $25,000 for three emerging Indigenous musicians or groups to cover the costs of producing a professional recording that can be played on radio and sold commercially,” Mr Garrett said.
“Music is such a great vehicle of expression and creativity for young Indigenous Australians and I can’t wait to see what new talent is discovered in 2010,” Mr Garrett said.

Media and guests were also treated to a performance by the Street Warriors that included special guests, Deadly dancer Albert David and Goanna’s Shane Howard for the Street Warriors’ current single, the re-working of the classic Goanna hit, Solid Rock. The recording features Shannon Noll and is available on the album. The album is shipping to stores from next week but is also available here online through the GoSet Online music store.
